FedEx aiming a Comeback in 2014?

It has been a disappointing semi-final finish for Rodger Federer at the Australian Open. All throughout the tournament the former world no.1 had won all his matches without dropping a set, defeated Andy Murray convincingly in the quarters and many thought this tournament would be Federer’s comeback tournament. But it was Rafael Nadal once again who crashed Federer’s dreams.

The winner of 17 grand slam titles has been on a decline in the rankings and even with his gameplay. With his age already on the wrong side of thirty, it gets harder for the maestro to win every match with every passing grand slam. Fans catch a glimpse of his previous self now and then but the consistency he once used to maintain is all but gone. His power and accuracy levels have declined, his back hand keeps letting him down.

This series of low key performances in comparison to the very high standards Federer has set for himself, has also left its effect on his confidence levels. Losing matches never increases confidence.

Besides Rafael Nadal has always been the fork in his way with 23 wins over the Swiss master. It has been a really demoralizing loss for Federer . Federer’s weak point has always been his one back hand and against right handed players he can cover it up by quickly switching to a forehand. But in case of Nadal’s left handed serves which land deep in the court and Federer has no option other than playing backhand after backhand, that too from some very uncomfortable positions. Unable to attack with his forehand, Federer is much weakened.

The Australian Open was the first tournament of 2014 and major improvements could be detected in Rodgers Federer’s games from that of 2013. Under the direction of Stephan Edberg and a new 98inch frame racket it looks like Federer is trying to claw his way back in the competition.

Rodger Federer will be teaming up with Stanislas Wawrinka who beat Nadal to win the Australian Open to appear in the Davis Cup tie in Serbia. He last represented Switzerland in 2012 in a playoff against Netherlands.

Looks like Federer is determined to put up a fight and have a successful 2014.But his real test will always be against Nadal.
