From an exhilarating catch to a Jaffa, we witnessed every bit of astonishing moments which kept us at the edge of our seats. As we come to the completion of yet another action-packed week, it leaves us with much to talk about the players, teams and the fans in the middle east, which are increasing day by day, depicting that the world is unruffled by the setbacks which hit everyone a year ago. So as the previous edition, here too we continue reviewing the IPL 2014 which has won the hearts of everybody so far!
Players who Rocked
Chris Lynn, the Gymnast! : – After a first ever game for KKR in IPL, Chris Lynn has been successful in making a name for himself as he is now on everyone’s lips as far as the KKR fans are concerned. His crispy 45 off just 31 balls propelled KKR to a competitive score of 150 before the same man took a jaw-dropping catch of none other than AB de Villiers which literally won the game for the Knights. Before the match, everybody was criticising the decision of leaving out Shakib but that proved to be blessing in disguise.
Glenn Maxwell everywhere! : – Well you just can’t keep him out of the tournament. He has bagged 3 man of the match awards, has been deservingly the current holder of the orange cap and is at the top of the long list of players hitting most no. of sixes. His scores of 95, 89 and 95 not only states he is a brilliant striker of the ball and gets quick runs, but also clearly indicates that he doesn’t think about milestones and plays only for the team’s cause.
Pravin Tambe, the Economist! : – When you have players like Maxwell and Miller who are murdering bowlers to all parts of the ground and still a bowler has an economy rate of below 7, it becomes clear that the bowler is none other than the 42 years old Pravin Tambe! He has been consistent in restricting the scoring rate of opposing teams but has not been able to increase his wicket column significantly as he did so often during the last edition. As he took 4 wickets against the strong RCB batting line up, it’s clear that as the IPL will proceed further, he will become more and more dangerous for opposing teams.
Players who Flopped
Not the Hussey we know: – Michael Hussey’s outing in Mumbai colours is not at all having a good effect on him. Yet again he was dismissed cheaply but this time off an unplayable delivery from Ben Hilfenhaus. While his bad luck continues, the team management are longing for a better performance from Mike Hussey.
Gautam Gambhir: – 1 run in 4 innings. That’s enough to depict Gautam Gambhir’s journey of being out of form. After scoring his 1st run, against Kings XI Punjab, it seemed as if he has reached a triple figure mark and then he came down the pitch, the very next ball, and hit straight to the cover fielder!
Yuvraj Singh: – Many thought he is back in form but the manner in which he was struggling against KKR bowlers in the death overs has changed the mindset of people. After Kohli was dismissed off a ripper bowled by Sunil Narine, Yuvraj was facing trouble in taking singles and faced a lot of dot balls which increased pressure. Yes, he struck a couple of boundaries towards the end but couldn’t finish the job for RCB.
Two Legged Catch: – Want to practice catching without using hands? Ask David Miller because he is a perfectionist in this department. He took a catch when the ball stuck between his legs and maintained his composure to avoid the ball to touch the ground.
Who will face whom? : – Yes, that’s what Punjab openers in the form of Sehwag and Pujara were thinking at the start of their chase against Rajasthan Royals. While at one end the batsmen were conversing themselves, at the other end the bowlers were thinking the same. Lastly, it was Kane Richardson who bowled to Cheteshwar Pujara.
Nightmare for Mishra and Kulkarni at Sharjah! : –16 years back, Sharjah was caught by a desert storm. Coming back to this year, the same ground was caught up by “M” storm- Maxwell and Miller.
In the match against Rajasthan Royals, at the start of the 18th over, Punjab required a run rate of above 12. But the 6 deliveries that followed changed the complexion of the game as the required rate came down to just 5 an over. How? Because of four sixes hit by David Miller in the 18th over bowled by Dhawal Kulkarni.
Then it was time for Amit Mishra to face the music from, another big-hitter, Glenn Maxwell. The 13th over went for 25 runs which is so unlikely for a leg-spinner who has been in some form these days. The quarter century runs included 3 back to back sixes from Maxwell and one from Miller.
Two unforgettable nights for both the batsmen and the bowlers.
The Jaffa: – Pitching on middle and leg, shaping away from the left hander and then knocking off his off-stump- that’s the dream delivery for any fast bowler. That’s the “Jaffa” I stated at the start of this article. Ben Hilfenhaus bowled this unplayable delivery to the out-of-form Mike Hussey.
The Return of KP: – Delhi Daredevils fans vented out a big relief as their captain Kevin Pieterson was back on the field. He was playing for the first time since January so it was bit difficult for him to cope with his batting. Back to back boundaries, in the match against Sunrisers, oozed his confidence but the required run rate was very tough for him to get alone. Ultimately he was holed out in the long off region but he has signalled his intent for the rest of this IPL.
15 overs, 3 boundaries: – You read it right! Amidst all the big players and monstrous hitters, there is a leg spinner who has bowled 15 overs so far in this IPL and has just conceded 3 boundaries. With a strong batting line-up, RCB have produced a pocket-sized dynamo who is proving to be crucial every game. Yuzvendra Chahal- The Unsung Hero!
Week of Drops: – As many as 11 catches were dropped and what surprised us were the names of the culprits involved which included the likes of Ross Taylor, JP Duminy, David Warner, Manoj Tiwary(twice in a match) and Kieron Pollard (twice in a match)!
Kings XI Punjab has won all the four while the defending champions are yet to open their account.
As an action-packed week comes to an end, we all hope that the coming week and the weeks to follow keep continue to entertain the fans and give amazing moments and stats. I will be back with the review of the upcoming week which will be last in the middle east before the IPl goes back to it’s birthplace!
