After a stellar year with Real Madrid, Cristiano Ronaldo was awarded the FIFA Ballon d’Or for the second time. Ronaldo had been instrumental in helping his club achieve victories as well as push his national team into the World Cup. He led from the front and scored 69 goals in 60 games in all competitions.
Ronaldo was instrumental in Portugal’s presence in the 2014 FIFA World Cup; with a hattrick against Sweden in the second leg, the Portuguese captain was again at the heart of things as he outshone his Swedish counterpart Zlatan Ibrahimovic.
With a little help from FIFA which extended the voting deadline for Ballon d’Or to include the playoff match between Sweden and Portugal, Ronaldo ended the drought of four years. Since Ronaldo had last won the Ballon d’Or in 2008, Lionel Messi had won the prestigious award for four years in a row. Messi had been suffering from an injury and with a humane 45 goals from 46 games, Ronaldo beat Franck Ribery to bag the award.
Cristiano Ronaldo deserves the win because he is a complete player. Precision, perfection and perseverance defines his attitude on the field. His role on the field is that of an winger but to become the best player in the world he had to develop his skills so much that he could comfortably play as a forward as well. He has great ability to score goals from distances long and short. Goal keepers all around the world fear his dipping free-kick. Defenders are wary of the many skills he displays with the ball while running down the flank; Ronaldo leaves them so confused with his speed that they seldom have any option other than to foul him, even fouls happen unintentionally as he dribbles and defenders miss the ball but find his sheens or calves. Ronaldo’s physique has been instrumental in helping him win more challenges than any of his compatriots for the Ballon d’Or. Ronaldo can also play with his feet and can comfortably score headers.
With a secure future at Real Madrid till 2018, Ronaldo will try to develop himself further and prove his prowess to people who still doubt his capabilities.
