Its time that of the year again, when players nominate who would win the PFA player of the year. Last season it was Gareth Bale who took the honors for his outstanding display for Tottenham Hotspurs but who would it be this time? Before we try to answer that question, lets have a look at the nominations for this season of the Barclays Premier League.
The nominees who have been shortlisted for the award are : Luis Suarez of Liverpool, Eden Hazard of Chelsea, Adam Lallana of Southampton, Daniel Sturridge of Liverpool, Yaya Toure of Manchester City and Steven Gerrard of Liverpool.
It comes as no surprise that there are 3 Liverpool players on the list, considering their position in the league table. The goal scoring prowess of SAS (Suarez and Sturridge) had to put them on the list with 50 goals between the pair this season, Steven Gerrard is there for all those amazing displays and match winning penalties as well; you need to have bottle to convert those. Yaya Toure has been nothing short of brilliant as the attacking midfielder for Manchester City scoring 18 goals for his club. Eden Hazard has been in scintillating form scoring 14 goals for Chelsea and Adam Lallana has done brilliantly for Southampton which has led to calls for international duty with England.
Each player has been pivotal to their club but if the award has to go to someone it has to be Luis Suarez. He has scored almost a goal every game and has contributed a lot more by providing 12 assists this season as well; he tops in that list as well. He has scored 30 goals for the Reds this season, catapulting them to the top of the league as the Reds try to win their first league title in 24 years.
Suarez has been in devastating form, plus we need to remember he missed the first 5 games of the season due to a ban imposed by the FA last season for having a nibble of the Serbia and Chelsea defender Branislav Ivanovic. If that was not bad enough for Suarez, he wanted out of Liverpool before the start of the season. Since he has completed half of his ban, he wanted to play champions league football with another club with Arsenal launching a bid for Suarez with the 40 million + 1 pound bid which was rebuffed by Liverpool.
Most players would have ensured the move away from their club but Suarez stayed put, credit should be given to Brendan Rodgers for keeping the player and also making sure he is not affected by any of the shenanigans. Suarez has combined with Sturridge amazingly well and seems to have taken up the mantle to finally break the curse of Liverpool not winning the Premier League.
He even captained Liverpool when Gerrard was injured and led them to a 5-0 away win against Tottenham, this just shows how much he has grown in a Liverpool jersey and he ensured that any negative thoughts supporters would have against him were dispelled when he signed a new contract at the start of the year, that was probably done to insert some clause which would keep him at the club for longer unless someone puts in a ludicrous offer to buy him.
Whatever he does at the end of the season, leaves or stays, Liverpool fans would want him to stay, there is no doubt he has helped turn Liverpool’s season around and has almost taken them to the holy grail, that is the Premier League title. Liverpool will be wishing he stays longer and helps them win more, what is certain is that he will get better as he is only 27, that does not bode well for all the defenders in England and in Europe.
Love him or hate him, you can’t ignore him. He has been a model professional this season and he has kept himself away from all the controversy that has surrounded him for the past 2 seasons. He seems to still have a hunger, sorry for the pun, that can only be sated once he wins a title with Liverpool and in the form he has been in, there is no doubt he can do it. He certainly would be a worthy winner for Player of the year.
