One of the legends of Bengali cinema, Suchitra Sen, passed away last Friday. She had already been under treatment at Belle Vue Clinic since December 23rd,2013. Doctors attending her said that she had suffered a massive heart attack on Friday morning and passed away at 8:25am. She is survived by daughter Moon Moon Sen and granddaughters Ria Sen and Raima Sen.
Suchitra Sen captured public imagination through her ethereal beauty and celluloid performances mainly in Bengali cinema. Her debut movie, Shesh Kothaay, was made in 1952 but it was never released. The following year she was seen acting opposite Uttam Kumar in Sharey Chuattor which became a mojor box office hit. They went on to rule Bengali cinema for the next 20 years and became legends in their field.
Her first Hindi debut came in the form of Devdas(1955) for which she received the Best Actress Award. She was nominated as Best Actress at the Filmfare awards for her role in Aandhi(1974) ; Sanjeev Kumar who potrayeed the role of her husband in the movie received the Best Actor Award.
in 1963 she tasted international success when she won the Best Actress award at Moscow Intenational Film Festival for Saat Paake Bandha. It was the first time that any Indian Actress had received that award.
Sen continued to act even after her husband’s death in 1970.She called it a day when her movie Pronoy Pasha flopped at the box office.
She went into complete seclusion after retirement and maintained a large distance from the media as well as from the film industry. It has been alleged that she even refused the Dadasaheb Phalke award in 2005 to prevent public appearance
Mamata Banerjee became the first public personality in over 35 years to meet the enigmatic actress face to face at the clinic. The state Government hosted a gun salute in her respect.
Her body had been covered with thick blankets as fans had gathered to pay homage to the star.
Suchitra Sen’s daughter, actress Moon Moon Sen completed the last rites in presence of her daughters Ria and Raima as many noted actors from the Bengali film industry were present to pay respects, as well.
Suchitra Sen will be remembered for her immense prowess as an actress and her beauty that left every person in awe. The way she decided to spend her life after retirement had always kept her fans in wonder.
Maybe she wanted everyone to remember her as the actress who never aged;she wanted eternal youth and she acquired it by capturing her best days on film. R.I.P.
