Imagine, one moment you are at the peak of your life and enjoying success in every department. Then, suddenly, comes a moment where you become useless and weak and start thinking of “ending your life” or “ending your job”. It’s like you are living two separate lives. Recently, similar signs have been shown by a cricket player who plays as if he has two different souls. He plays like an invincible crusader in one part of the world and like a meek shadow in the other. If you still can’t recognize whom I am talking of, then here’s my answer- Suresh Raina!
A middle order batsman who would pace his game brilliantly and save the best for the last. What else do you want? Raina has played more than 100 IPL games- even more than Dhoni- which tells you the importance of him in the team. He has been a strong contributor to his team’s success and with MS Dhoni in the side, it has proved to be an icing on the cake for Chennai Super Kings.
When I saw his last innings, against Delhi, it seemed as if nothing could have stopped him from scoring. From the delicate cuts to cover drives, he was looking a perfect player who was enjoying his game in the middle. He has played similar innings for CSK and, more importantly, has performed consistently which has won his team 3 IPL crowns.
However, Raina is altogether a different batsman when it comes to batting on overseas pitches.
After performing brilliantly in the World Cup 2011, he was selected for the England tour which turned out to be a disastrous one for the Men in Blue and it also began their bad run in overseas tours. England bowlers found Raina’s weak link of tackling short balls and made him pay for it, dearly.
Even in sub continental pitches, he was attacked by the menacing pace of Mitchell Johnson as he exposed vulnerability to great heights. From thereon, the bowlers just bowled one type of delivery to Raina which has forced him to practice pull shots
Sourav Ganguly and many others have criticized him of jumping around, the moment he sees a short ball. Instead he could well duck under it as the bowlers are not going to bowl like that the whole day. Recently we have seen Suresh Raina playing pull shots almost perfectly but still it is a long way to go for him and it will be interesting to see how he performs in the upcoming tours of England and Australia.
As the IPL is going around, you all will be witnessing the best of Suresh Raina but a bigger test is waiting for him, 2 months from now. So we saw the two parts of Suresh Raina and we all hope that the 1st part is always the active one in his career!
